Videocon Mobiles recently launched the Cube 3 smartphone in India, with a panic button. This feature was made mandatory by the DoT recently to be included in both smartphones and feature phones. The 4G VoLTE-enabled Videocon Cube 3 sells at a price of Rs. 8,490, and will available at retail stores all across the country.
With this launch, the company says that it will be introducing the panic button across its entire portfolio of smartphones and feature phones. The panic button is placed inside the SOS-Be Safe app, which according to Videocon Mobiles, uses the power button to send out an SOS alert to pre-registered numbers when the user presses the power button in an emergency.
The SOS-Be Safe app also has features like Alert, Walk with Me, and Reach on Time. Users can enable these features from their smartphone's status bar and set security parameters like time, distance and contacts. The app uses GPS access to provide a map view of nearby police stations and hospitals for any emergency.
As per an order issued in July this year, the government has mandated that no mobile phone handset manufacturer shall sell the new mobile phone handset in India without the facility of identifying the location through Satellite based GPS from January 1, 2018. This concept of a device with panic button feature was floated after brutal gangrape of a paramedical student in Delhi.
The Ministry of Finance in December 2013 had approved a Nirbhaya Fund, following the incident, under which integration of the police administration with mobile phone network to trace and respond to distress calls with minimum response time was to be done. Videocon’s efforts to upgrade its entire portfolio with this feasibility is a step in this direction.
As far as the phone is concerned, Videocon Cube 3 supports dual-SIM and runs on Android 6.0 Marshmallow. It has a 5-inch HD (720x1280 pixel) IPS display with 2.5D curved glass and Dragontrail X protection. It is powered by a 1.3GHz quad-core MediaTek MT6735 SoC, and comes with 3GB of RAM.
The Videocon Cube 3 boasts of a 13-megapixel rear camera with dual-LED flash and PDAF, as well as a 5-megapixel front-facing camera with LED flash. The smartphone has a 32GB of inbuilt storage but it is also expandable via microSD card. The phone features 4G, VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n, Bluetooth v4.0, GPS/ A-GPS, FM radio, a 3.5mm audio jack, and Micro-USB connectivity options, powered by a 3000mAh battery.
